Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 pounds pork shoulder Also known as pork butt.
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce Your choice of flavor.
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced

Spices

  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • Optional: red pepper flakes for heat

Preparation

  • Trim excess fat from the pork shoulder and cut the meat into large chunks for even cooking, about 3-4 pieces.
  • In a large bowl, combine smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and cumin. Rub this mixture all over the pork.

Cooking

  • Place the sliced onions at the bottom of the slow cooker and add the seasoned pork on top.
  • Sprinkle minced garlic over the pork and pour the barbecue sauce evenly on top.
  • Cover the slow cooker and set it on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours.
  • Once cooked, shred the pork right in the cooker and mix it with the juices.

Notes

For best results, marinate the pork overnight and experiment with different barbecue sauces to find your preferred flavor. Store any leftovers in an airtight container for 3-4 days or freeze for up to three months.
