Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 head cabbage, chopped
  • 1 pound smoked sausage, sliced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Seasonings and Optional Ingredients

  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat (about 375°F). Allow the oil to warm for approximately 1-2 minutes until shimmering.
  • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing for about 2-3 minutes until the onion becomes translucent and fragrant.
  • Stir in the sliced sausage and cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the sausage is browned and slightly crispy.
  • Add the chopped cabbage, along with salt, pepper, caraway seeds, and red pepper flakes (if using). Mix well, ensuring the cabbage is evenly coated.
  • Extend cooking for another 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the cabbage is tender but still retains some structure.
  • Serve warm, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.

Notes

This dish can be made ahead, stored in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days, or frozen for about 2-3 months. For variations, try replacing sausage with turkey or adding diced apples for a sweet twist.
