  • 1 cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt Greek yogurt can be used for a lighter version.
  • 0.5 cup mayonnaise Can be substituted with cream cheese for a thicker texture.
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder Feel free to add more for flavor.
  • Fresh herbs, like parsley, for topping Adds color and freshness.

Preparation

  • Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Stir in the chopped onions with a big pinch of salt and pepper. Cook for 5 minutes until they start to soften.
  • Reduce the heat to low. Cook the onions, stirring often, for about 30 to 60 minutes until they are dark brown and caramelized.
  • Let the onions cool slightly before adding them to the dip.

Mixing the Dip

  • In a bowl, whisk together the sour cream, mayonnaise, garlic powder, and a big pinch of salt and pepper.
  • Stir in the caramelized onions until everything is well combined. Adjust the seasoning if needed.

Serving

  • Serve the dip with chips, crackers, pretzels, or veggies. Store any leftovers in the fridge for a few days.

Notes

Be patient when caramelizing the onions; the longer you cook them, the richer and sweeter they become. This dip can be prepared a day in advance.
