Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar using an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  • Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Mix in vanilla extract and lemon zest if you are using it.
  • Alternately add the flour mixture and milk to the creamed butter mixture, starting and ending with the flour. Mix only until just combined to avoid overmixing.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.

Baking

  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow cakes to cool in their pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting

  • Beat the softened butter until smooth. Gradually add sifted powdered sugar, then milk and vanilla extract, beating until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  • Divide frosting into separate bowls and tint each with different food coloring gels.

Decorating

  • Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of colored frosting over the top.
  • Place the second cake layer on top, then frost the entire cake with a base color.
  • Unleash your creativity! Use the remaining colored frosting to pipe fun designs, shapes, or swirls.
  • Decorate with sprinkles, candy eyes, mini marshmallows, gummy candies, wafer sticks, chocolate chips, and cotton candy as desired.

Notes

Store any leftover Chaos Cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days. If you want to keep it longer, you can refrigerate it for a week. Just be sure to bring it to room temperature before serving for the best taste. Avoid storing it in a humid environment to maintain the texture of the frosting and decorations.
