Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon mixed fresh herbs (such as rosemary, thyme, and parsley)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup buttermilk Can substitute with milk + vinegar or lemon juice.
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (optional) For brushing on top before baking.

Cheese

  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, salt, and mixed herbs, stirring until evenly blended.
  • Gently fold in the grated cheddar cheese, ensuring it’s well incorporated with the dry ingredients.
  • Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk. Stir until just combined—avoid overmixing.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, knead gently for about 1 minute until it comes together.
  • Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • (Optional) Brush the top of the loaf with melted butter.
  • Cut a deep cross on the top of the dough.

Baking

  • Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Notes

Serve warm with butter or alongside your favorite soups and salads. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days, or freeze for longer storage.
