Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease a baking dish with butter.
  • Layer half of the potatoes in the dish, followed by half of the onions. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  • Add half of the cheddar and Gruyère cheeses.
  • Repeat layers with the remaining potatoes, onions, cheeses, and more salt and pepper.
  • Pour heavy cream over the layered ingredients.

Cooking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45-60 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  • Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Choose starchy potatoes for best texture. A sharper cheddar cheese enhances flavor. Allow the gratin to rest before serving for easier slicing.
