Ingredients
  

For the casserole

  • 4 large potatoes, thinly sliced Ensure even slicing for uniform cooking.
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese You can mix different types of cheese for variety.
  • 1 cup heavy cream Can be substituted with more milk for a lighter version.
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter For sautéing garlic and greasing the dish.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon thyme (optional) Can be omitted for a simpler flavor.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat and sauté the minced garlic until fragrant.
  • Add heavy cream, milk, salt, pepper, and thyme, and bring to a simmer.

Layering and Baking

  • In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by half of the cheese, and then pour half of the cream mixture over.
  • Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, cheese, and cream mixture.
  • Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and golden brown on top.
  • Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve warm as a side dish with roasted meats or grilled chicken. Consider adding fresh herbs like parsley before serving for color and flavor. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days.
