  • 2 pounds potatoes, thinly sliced Use firm, starchy potatoes like Russets for best texture.
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk Can substitute some cream with low-fat milk for a healthier option.
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or your choice) Feel free to mix different types of cheese for added flavor.
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • to taste Salt and pepper Adjust seasoning according to your taste preferences.
  • 1 tablespoon butter For sautéing onions and garlic.

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes.
  • In a saucepan, melt butter and sauté onions and garlic until soft.
  • In a bowl, mix together heavy cream, milk, salt, and pepper.
  • Pour half of the cream mixture over the potatoes, then sprinkle half of the cheese on top.
  • Add another layer of potatoes, the rest of the cream mixture, and top with remaining cheese.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden and bubbly.

Notes

Serve hot, garnished with fresh herbs like parsley or chives. To store leftovers, cool completely, cover tightly, and refrigerate for up to 3-4 days, or freeze for longer storage. Let the dish sit for a few minutes after baking for easier serving.
