Ingredients
  

For the scalloped potatoes

  • 4 large potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or your choice) Mix of cheeses can enhance flavor.
  • 1 cup cooked ham, diced Can be omitted for a vegetarian version.
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Butter for greasing the baking dish

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Grease a baking dish with butter.
  • Layer half of the potato slices in the baking dish, followed by half of the onion slices and half of the ham.
  • Pour half of the cream over the layers and sprinkle with salt, pepper, and cheese.
  • Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, onions, ham, cream, salt, pepper, and cheese.

Baking

  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbly.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider using a mix of cheeses like mozzarella and gouda. Garlic or herbs like thyme or rosemary can also enhance the taste. Make sure the potatoes are thinly sliced for even cooking.
