  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk at room temperature
  • 0.5 cups vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1.5 cups colorful sprinkles for decorating

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two round cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients and mix well until smooth.
  • Slowly stir in the boiling water until the batter is well combined; the batter will be thin.
  • Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.

Baking

  • Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Serving

  • Once cooled, frost and decorate the cakes with colorful sprinkles.

Notes

Store any leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week. To keep it longer, wrap tightly and freeze for up to 3 months.
