Ingredients

For the Patty Melt

  • 1 pound Ground beef Lean ground beef for best results
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese Can substitute with other cheese if preferred
  • 1 large Onion, sliced Caramelized for sweetness
  • 4 slices Bread Rye or any preferred type
  • 4 tablespoons Butter For cooking and spreading
  • Salt and pepper To taste

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized, about 10 to 15 minutes.
  • In a separate bowl, season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Form it into four equal-sized patties, about ¾-inch thick.
  • Heat another skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness.
  • Once cooked, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty. Cover the skillet to allow the cheese to melt effectively, about 1-2 minutes.
  • While the cheese is melting, butter one side of each slice of bread.

Cooking

  • In a separate skillet, place the bread butter-side down. Build the melts by layering each cheesy patty, followed by caramelized onions and then another slice of bread on top.
  • Grill the sandwiches for about 2-3 minutes on each side until they are golden brown and the cheese is completely melted.
  • Remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot.

Notes

Serve with crispy fries, fresh salad, or coleslaw. Consider using garlic butter on the bread or adding Worcestershire sauce to the beef for added flavor.
