  • 4 large potatoes, thinly sliced Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes work best.
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or a mix) Experiment with different cheeses for varied flavor.
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup milk Can substitute with non-dairy milk.
  • 1 medium onion, diced Adds depth to the dish.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Adds great flavor.
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Butter for greasing

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish with butter.
  • In a skillet, sauté the diced onion and garlic until translucent.
  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the greased dish, then add half of the sautéed onion and garlic mixture.
  • Sprinkle half of the shredded cheese on top.
  • Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, onion and garlic, and cheese.
  • In a bowl, mix heavy cream, milk, salt, and pepper. Pour this mixture over the layered dish.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  • Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve hot from the oven, garnished with fresh herbs like parsley. This dish pairs well with meats, salads, or as a hearty vegetarian option. If you have leftovers, store them in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
