  • 2.5 tablespoons white sugar For the dough
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt Enhances flavor
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil For the dough
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Main ingredient for churro dough
  • 2 quarts oil (for frying) Canola or vegetable oil preferred

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon For coating the churros

Chocolate Dipping Sauce

  • 1 cup chocolate chips For melting into a sauce
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream To help melt and smooth the chocolate

Instructions

Prepare the Dough

  • In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the water, 2 1/2 tablespoons of sugar, salt, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Bring the mixture to a boil, then remove from heat.
  • Stir in the flour quickly until the mixture forms a ball.

Fry the Churros

  • Heat the oil in a deep-fryer or deep skillet to 375°F (190°C).
  • Using a pastry bag, pipe strips of dough into the hot oil, working in batches. Fry for about 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown.
  • Drain the fried churros on paper towels to absorb excess oil.

Coat and Serve

  • In a shallow dish, combine 1/2 cup of sugar with the ground cinnamon. Roll the drained churros in this mixture while they’re still warm.
  • For churros con chocolate, melt the chocolate chips in the microwave with a few teaspoons of heavy cream until smooth.
  • Serve churros hot, optionally with a chocolate sauce, caramel, or ice cream.

Notes

Churros are best enjoyed fresh. If stored, keep in an airtight container for up to 2 days. They can be frozen for up to 2 months. To reheat, bake at 350°F (175°C) for 5-10 minutes.
