Main Ingredients

  • 2 pounds beef chuck roast Look for a nice cut for best flavor.
  • 1 cup beef broth Can substitute with chicken or vegetable broth.
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce Use gluten-free tamari for gluten-free option.
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper To taste.

Additional Ingredients

  • 1 onion, sliced Fresh onions can be found in the produce section.
  • 6 hoagie rolls Best served on warm rolls.
  • Sliced provolone cheese (optional) Melt onto the warm meat for extra flavor.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Place the beef chuck roast directly into the crock pot.
  • Layer the sliced onion over the roast.
  • Add beef broth, water, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and sprinkle salt and pepper to taste.

Cooking

  • Cover the crock pot and set it to cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours.
  • Once cooking time is up, shred the beef gently with two forks.

Serving

  • Serve the shredded beef on hoagie rolls, topping with sliced provolone cheese if desired.
  • Serve with the reserved cooking liquid for dipping.

Notes

For variations, consider substituting ingredients like seitan for a vegetarian option, or adding spices for a kick. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days in the fridge, or freeze for up to 3 months.
