For the Casserole

  • 1 loaf day-old French bread, cut into cubes Brioche or challah also work beautifully.
  • 8 large eggs Room temperature eggs integrate more easily.
  • 2 cups whole milk Almond or oat milk can be used for lactose-free version.
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
  • Gently fold in the bread cubes, ensuring each piece is well-coated.
  • Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish, pressing down slightly to let the bread absorb the custard.
  • Let it sit for about 20 minutes or cover and refrigerate overnight.

Baking

  • Place the dish in the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Allow it to cool for about 5-10 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days. Can be frozen for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight and reheat at 350°F until warmed through.
