Ingredients
  

Onion Preparation

  • 1 piece sweet onion
  • 2 cups buttermilk You can substitute with regular milk mixed with vinegar or lemon juice.

Coating Mixture

  • 2 cups All-Purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon cayenne
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder

Frying

  • As needed amount Neutral cooking oil For frying

Preparation

  • Peel the onion and cut it in half through the root. Lay the cut side down on a cutting board, and slice into half moons.
  • Place the onion slices in a bowl with buttermilk and soak for at least 30 minutes.

Frying

  • Heat about two inches of neutral oil in a deep pot to 375°F.
  • Combine flour, salt, black pepper, cayenne, paprika, and garlic powder in a shallow bowl.
  • Drain the soaked onion strings, ensuring no excess buttermilk remains.
  • Coat onion strings in the flour mixture and shake off excess.
  • Carefully add coated onions to the hot oil, frying in batches for about 3-5 minutes until golden brown.
  • Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Repeat until all onions are cooked.

Notes

Serve immediately. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days. For best results, reheat in the oven.
