Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 4 pieces hamburger buns
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley (optional for garnish)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until shimmering, about 1-2 minutes.
  • Add the sliced onions to the skillet and cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and caramelized.
  • Stir in the minced garlic, cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Add the ground beef to the skillet, cooking until fully browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Drain any excess fat, then stir in the Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for 5 minutes.
  • While the mixture simmers, toast the hamburger buns until golden brown.
  • Scoop the beef mixture onto the bottom half of each bun, top with shredded Swiss cheese, and close with the top bun.
  • Garnish with freshly chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

Store leftover sloppy joes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Can be frozen for up to 3 months. Reheat on the stovetop or microwave. Tips include slicing onions and mincing garlic ahead of time, and using ingredient alternatives like provolone or mozzarella. Avoid sogginess by letting the beef cool before assembling sandwiches.
