Ingredients
  

For the Casserole

  • 1 12-ounce loaf brioche or challah bread, cut into cubes Any mildly sweet bread would work.
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk Can be substituted with plant-based milk.
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Place the bread cubes in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. If desired, cover and let sit overnight in the refrigerator.

Make the Custard

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.

Combine

  • Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Press down gently with a spatula to ensure the bread is well soaked.

Chill

  • Let the casserole sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for the best results.

Bake

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  • Cover the casserole with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly at the edges.

Serve

  • Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving warm. Top with syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit if desired.

Notes
