Vegetables

  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups okra, sliced Adds a unique flavor

Liquids

Cooking

  • In a large pot, brown the sausage over medium heat.
  • Add the onion, bell pepper, celery, and garlic. Cook until softened.
  • Stir in the chicken broth, diced tomatoes, and Cajun seasoning.
  • Bring the mixture to a simmer and add the okra.
  • Let it simmer for about 20 minutes.
  • Add the shrimp and cook until pink and cooked through.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Serve over cooked rice and garnish with chopped green onions.

Notes

For a richer taste, consider making your own chicken broth. Don't skip the okra; it adds a unique flavor and thickness. Adjust the Cajun seasoning for desired spice level. For thicker gumbo, let it simmer longer or add a small amount of flour mixed with water.
