For the cake

  • 1 box orange cake mix The backbone of simplicity!
  • 1 cup orange juice Freshly squeezed is ideal.
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest Use zest from a fresh orange for vibrant flavors.
  • 3 large eggs Use room temperature eggs for best results.
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil Can substitute with melted coconut oil.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Opt for pure vanilla extract.

For the buttercream

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Essential for creamy buttercream.
  • 4 cups powdered sugar For sweetness and fluff.
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk Adjust for frosting consistency.
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest For a harmonious touch in the frosting.

For decoration

  • as needed Sprinkles or orange slices Optional for decoration.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.

Making the cake

  • In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, orange juice, orange zest, eggs, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until well integrated.
  • Pour the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Making the buttercream and assembly

  • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and mix until combined.
  • Pour in the milk and add the orange zest, continuing to beat until the buttercream is light and fluffy.
  • Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving platter. Spread a layer of buttercream on top, then place the second layer and repeat. Add the third layer on top!
  • Frost the top and sides of the entire cake with the buttercream, and decorate as desired.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature ingredients and experiment with different citrus zests for unique flavors. Chill your cake if needed after frosting to set everything in place.
