  • 1 Star Anise Adds an exotic twist; don't skip it!
  • 1/4 cup Sugar Adjust to taste; honey or maple syrup are alternatives.
  • 1 cup Water Helps dilute the intensity for a smooth drink.

Preparation

  • In a saucepan, combine the red wine, sliced orange, lemon, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, sugar, and water.
  • Heat over medium-low heat until hot but not boiling, stirring gently to dissolve the sugar.
  • Let it simmer for about 20-30 minutes to let the flavors meld. Taste it before serving and adjust sweetness if necessary.
  • Strain the mixture into mugs and enjoy warm.

Notes

Serve the mulled wine with additional garnishes like a cinnamon stick and a twist of orange peel for decoration. It pairs well with cheese platters, roasted chestnuts, or dark chocolate fondue.
