For Cooking Black Beans

  • 1 cup dried black beans Use fresh beans for best color retention.
  • 4 cups water Use filtered water if you have hard water.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Add salt to taste after cooking.

For Flavoring (Optional)

  • 1 clove garlic, minced Adds a nice aroma.
  • 1 bay leaf bay leaf To enhance flavor.

Preparation

  • Rinse the dried black beans under cold water to remove any dirt or debris.
  • Soak the beans in water overnight or for at least 8 hours to soften them.

Cooking

  • Drain the soaked beans and transfer them into a saucepan.
  • Add 4 cups of water to the saucepan with the beans.
  • Bring the water to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 30-45 minutes or until beans are tender.
  • Add salt and any additional flavoring ingredients once the beans are tender and cook for another 5 minutes.

Notes

To maintain the dark color of beans, avoid adding acidic ingredients during cooking. Instead, add them after the beans are fully cooked.
