Ingredients
  

Potato Layer

  • 4 large large potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (such as cheddar or Gruyère) You can use a mix of cheeses for extra flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons butter For greasing the baking dish.
  • 1 half onion, finely chopped (optional) Adds extra flavor.

Cream Mixture

  • 2 cups heavy cream Can substitute half with low-fat milk for a lighter version.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (optional) Enhances flavor.
  • to taste Salt and pepper

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Grease a baking dish with butter.
  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the dish.
  • In a bowl, mix the heavy cream, garlic, salt, pepper, and thyme, and pour half over the potatoes.
  • Sprinkle half of the cheese on top.
  • Repeat layering with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and cheese.

Baking

  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  • Let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

You may add cooked bacon or ham for a heartier dish. For extra crunch, sprinkle breadcrumbs or crushed potato chips on top before the last baking session. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
