Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients

  • 2 pounds potatoes Peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion Thinly sliced
  • 2 cups shredded cheese Cheddar or your choice
  • 2 cups heavy cream or milk Can use low-fat milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter Dot on top before baking
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic Minced
  • optional fresh herbs Like thyme or rosemary for garnish

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Peel and thinly slice the potatoes.
  • In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by half of the onions, garlic, and cheese.
  • Season with salt and pepper.
  • Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.
  • Pour the heavy cream or milk over the top.
  • Dot with butter.

Baking

  • Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
  • Let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Use a mandoline slicer for evenly thin potato slices. Experiment with different cheeses for unique flavors. Add cooked bacon or ham for a heartier dish. Let the dish rest before serving to help it set.
