  • 2 cans cans of baked beans
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar Increase for sweeter beans if desired.
  • 1/4 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1/2 cup chopped onions
  • 1/2 cup diced bell pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (optional) Use any type of cheese you prefer.
  • 1/2 cup crispy bacon (optional) Omit for vegetarian version.

Preparation

  • Preheat your smoker to 225°F (107°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the baked beans, brown sugar, BBQ sauce, chopped onions, diced bell pepper, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • If using, stir in the cheese and bacon.
  • Transfer the mixture to a foil pan or cast-iron skillet.

Smoking

  • Smoke the beans for about 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally, until they are heated through and the flavors meld together.

Serving

  • Serve warm as a side dish at your cookout.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container for 3-5 days in the refrigerator, or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave. For added flavor, consider adding jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce for a kick.
