Traditional King Cake

Ingredients
  

For the cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 pack active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup milk Warm (not hot)
  • 1/4 cup butter Melted
  • 2 pieces eggs
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

For the icing and toppings

  • 1/4 cup cream cheese
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • Colored sugars (purple, green, and gold) For decoration

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Combine warm milk and yeast in a bowl and let it sit for 5 minutes.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and cinnamon.
  • Add melted butter, eggs, and the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients. Knead until smooth.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm place for about an hour.

Baking

  • Shape the dough into a ring, place a small wrapped surprise inside, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes.
  • Once baked, cool and top with icing made of cream cheese and powdered sugar, then sprinkle with colored sugars.

Notes

Serve King Cake at room temperature. Great for breakfast, dessert, or as a fun snack at a party. Keep leftovers covered at room temperature for up to three days, or wrap tightly and refrigerate for up to a week. Can also freeze for a couple of months.
